I love Plumb and they have the greatest songs, so I decided to try my hand at a songfic and my first fanfiction in general. Now the lyrics I have aren't exactly right, but they fit my fanficiton. Hopefully it's liked but feedback is appreciated. Also I don't own Maria, Michael and Liz or anything else affiliated with "Roswell".

Life sucked, that's all Maria thought these days. She felt like she was a paper doll, molded to act a certain way and cut into shapes to fit the perfect human being. Being Michael's protector was great. Just great, but one of these days she was going to blow. She couldn't stand not knowing what he was thinking, if he was okay. He tried not to say much to her these days, she guessed because of the defenses that he let down during that rough patch he was going through. However, she missed him. She missed him so much it hurt.

"Hey Maria, are you listening to a word that I'm saying?" Liz asked as she sat down next to Maria.

It was a Tuesday evening and Maria's day off, but she decided to come to the Crashdown anyway and chill with Liz, just to get her mind off of things. She didn't like to be at home these day's either, especially with her Mom and Sheriff Valenti dating quite heavily these days, and she didn't want to spend time in her room since it only reminded her of Michael.

"Sorry, Lizzie, I guess I went off in my own world."

"Thinking about Michael again Maria?"

"Ugh, if only that name didn't mean so much sometimes it would be so much easier." She turned and looked at her friend, her eyes brimming with tears. "You know, he won't even speak to me these days, I mean I know what happened that night really scared him and scared it me too. I mean, Liz, he really let his barrier down and let me in, through his nonverbal way, but ever since then, after my Mom and I picked him up from jail, it seems like he doesn't want to have anything to do with me."

"Maria, that's not true."

"Are you sure? Because it sure seems like it to me. You know when I walk down the hall he's always is going the other way? Or did you notice that he hardly comes into the Crashdown these days? Or at least when I work."

"He'll change, I mean, don't worry. Have you ever thought about moving on?"

"That'll probably never work, it'll probably end up like your last date with someone other than Max. Disaster, that's what." She said, laughing through her tears.

"Maria, it'll be okay, we're tough. We can live through this-- this thing with Max and Michael." Liz said, getting up and hugging Maria.

Questions drip from my umbrella,
shadows run over me
stand dear waiting
I know the sky will break and bleed
its light and kiss my face with mercy...

She didn't have the car tonight because her Mom had to go "somewhere", so she said. So she was stuck walking in the rain but it was okay. Her thoughts were so jumbled she needed the walk, and the rain that now was falling calmed her nerves. Rain helped her think, even though it brought back... well, it brought back some memories.

Questions ran through her head. Why'd she wait? Why'd he mean so much to her? Was it worth this hurt? Wait, cross out that last question, that was a definite yes. Yes, he was. Could she wait? Did she want to? Or should she move on?

If only the stars could talk and help her out with Michael, just once let her know where everything would lead.

Oh her lovely home just around the corner, someplace dry. Finally going to be out of the rain. She reached over and grabbed her keys out of her purse as she walked up the steps.

"What are you doing out here in the rain?" said a harsh voice behind her.

"Oh my God, Michael, you scared the crap out of me!" Maria exclaimed, jumping back a step and turning around.

"I've been waiting here forever, where have you been?" he asked. His hair was flattened by the rain and he looked really really angry and really cute.

What? She couldn't help it.

"What's wrong with you? Why do you care where I've been?"

"I don't know about you, but I don't want to have this conversation in the rain. So can we can go inside?"

"I can, but I don't think it's a good idea if you come in right now, Michael."

"Maria... " he said quietly as he reached for her hair and tucked a loose strand behind her ears. "We really need to talk."

Endure the rain
I'll wait an hour more
and if I truly don't see anything
I can't wait here any longer...

"I'm sorry." Were the first words mumbled from a wet Michael, who leaned against the sink as Maria closed the kitchen door.

"Michael--"

"Just listen. I've been a jerk. Yes, I know I've been going through shit lately but that doesn't mean I have to act like a total--"

"Jerk." Maria finished with a smile.

"Yeah, I guess you know what I mean. It's just I never thought I'd let go so much." He walked over towards Maria, her eyes shut for a moment but she didn't move away from him or the kitchen door. "Maria, you were my first."

"Your first?" she looked at him with inquisitive eyes.

"The first to break down the barriers, the first that I've ever ran to for help. The first person that I'm falling in love with." Michael looked in her eyes as he emphasized the word love.

Maria sighed and she couldn't help the grin that was starting to form at the corners of her mouth.

"You don't know how much I needed that." Maria said as she leaned over and hugged him.

Tear drops vanish in a moment,
rainbows hang over me,
darkness fading
I know the sky will break and bleed it's light
and kiss my face with mercy...
