don't have to hide their. . . well, alieness

Authour's notes: Based on the show 'Life's Little Miracles,' a documentry show
of children's hospital experiences. All text in **these** describe what the
camera sees and hears. All other paragraphs are the voice over's description of
events.
**Camera focuses on a young couple walking into a doctor's office. The man is tall with floppy brown hair and broody hazel eyes. The woman is small and delicate, with long golden hair and bright green eyes. She appears to be in her third trimester of pregnancy. The voice over begins.**
Michael and Maria Guerin are two Graduate students living in Santa Fe. Michael is an alien/human hybrid, while Maria is 100% human. Maria is pregnant with their first child. Due to Michael's alien genetics, there are some complications with their pregnancy.
**Camera focuses on Michael helping his wife ease down in a chair. A tall east Indian woman wearing a long white lab coat walks in through the door. The young couple greet her warmly, although nervously. Maria reaches for her husband's hand, clutching a framed ultra-sound picture on her lap.**
The alien species which donated part of Michael's genes has a gestation period of six weeks, in contrast to a human's gestation period of about thirty six weeks. Being a more advanced race of beings, the species has found a way to transfer the fetus early on in the gestation period to incubation pods, where they are closely monitored to give a stable environment for the healthy fetus to grow. This technique has been used for hundreds of years, rendering a womb pregnancy all but impossible for alien women.
**The doctor, Dr. Manjulika Sakariya as her nametag tells us, sits down across the desk, facing Michael and Maria. She crosses her arms over a thick stack of medical files, leaning slightly across the desk to look the couple in their eyes.
"It appears that the baby's alien genes are causing it to reject Maria's womb. What that means is that the placenta is not fully attached to the uterus lining, and as a result, is not giving the baby all the nutrients it needs to survive."
Maria's lower lip begins to tremble as Michael wraps an arm protectively around her slim shoulders and presses a comforting kiss against her temple.**
For the safety of both the mother and child, it is best for the fetus to be transferred into a pod not more than two weeks after conception. However, Maria is too far along in gestation for this to be done without a high possibility of permanent brain and nerve damage to the child. The alternative is for Maria to receive doses of cadmium-X, which would alter the womb conditions enough to properly contain the child until birth, but also creates danger for Maria. The doctors have no way of telling how her body will react to the treatment.
**"I don't care." The camera closes in on the determined face of the expectant mother. "I don't care what happens to me, as long as my baby survives." Michael visibly tenses.
"Maria -- "
"No. Don't you "Maria" me, Michael! We are having this baby, dammit, if it kills us both!" The camera focuses in on the tortured look on Michael's face as he runs a hand roughly thorough his hair and slouched in his chair, burying his face in his hands. Maria smiles gently, pulling him closer to her with one hand and rubbing his shoulders with the other.
"Hey, don't worry so much, Spaceboy. Everything is going to be fine."**
Although the doctors have high hopes for a successful pregnancy, there are still many reservations. This procedure has never been attempted before. With the minuscule number of alien/human hybrids, proper testing has not be established. Still, due to the dominance of Michael's human genetics, the doctors remain reasonably optimistic.
**Maria walks out of a change room now wearing a hospital gown. She smiles confidently at the camera, although it does not quite reach her eyes. Three other hybrids besides Michael wait along either side of an operating table. A small curly blond woman stands close beside the father-to-be, brushing her hand against his in support. A tall, statuesque blond woman and a slightly shorter black haired man with large ears stand on the other side of the table. Maria walks past two brunette women, one with green eyes, the other with brown, an man with graying dirty blond hair and cowboy boots, a lanky man with blue eyes and black hair, and a small, well built man with brown hair and blue eyes, still smiling as she clutches each of their hands in turn.**
There are not many aliens left on Earth. Due to atmospheric difficulties, aliens who do come to Earth must wear protective husks or shape shift to survive. Neither alternative is widely liked. The procedure must be performed by Michael and his family, with doctors closely monitoring their performance.
**Maria's smile wavers as she lays back on the table. Michael cups her face with his hand, his jaw clenching reflexively as he attempts to appear cheerful. The camera switches from one somber face to another. The hybrids place their hands along the pregnant woman's rounded stomach. Maria lets out a small squeak, laughing shakily at her nervousness. The camera closes in on her face as she screws her eyes shut and presses her full lips together. A gentle glow begins to shine, eventually fading Maria's face into pure white. It abruptly halts on Dr. Sakariya's cue. Unharmed, Maria laughs in relief as Michael bends down for a kiss.**
The first treatment has been a success. There is an immediate increase of nutrient intake through the placenta. Although the baby is smaller than the doctors would have liked due to the problems with the placenta, the fetus appears to be healthy.
**"I have to say that I thought the doctor was a quack at first, but now I'm glad that we -- well, Maria -- decided to go along with this. She was right." Michael sits at his wife's bedside. Maria appears to be healthy, although tired, and is hooked up to machines to regulate her performance. Maria smiles and playfully hits Michael across the arm.
"Was there ever a doubt?" We hear laughing as the camera focuses on the heart monitor, as two identical heartbeats blip across the screen.**
It has been twenty five days since beginning the treatment. Maria has been losing energy, rendering her almost completely dependent on others, an unexpected reaction to cadmium-X. She is nauseous and must be fed through an IV, but refuses to end the treatments. Maria is expected to give birth to the baby in less than a week.
**The camera tracks Michael as he paces around the waiting room. The tall blond woman stares at him sorrowfully next to the older brunette woman. The latter wipes tears from her eyes with a Kleenex and glares at the worried man.
"Michael, calm down already! Maria is going to be fine. My daughter is a fighter. She's too stubborn to let anything bad happen, so sit down before I strangle you." Michael lets his mother-in-law pull him down into a chair. He leaps out of his seat almost immediatly as a blue light begins to flash above his wife's door. Michael dashes into the room.**
Maria's body can no longer handle the large quantity of cadmium-X in her blood. The element must be removed immediately, but cannot without risk to the child. The doctors decide to do an emergency c-section, after which Michael and his family will remove the alien residue from Maria's body.
**The camera focuses on the doctors as the begin to cut through Maria's flesh along her bikini line. Impatient, Michael burst in through the doors. He brushes past the nurses as they try to lead him out of the operating room. Michael waves a hand across his wife's lower belly, causing it to split open down to the uterus. Two large men in scrubs take Michael by the arms and pull him out of the room as the baby is removed from Maria's womb.**
The operation is a success. The baby is strong and healthy, and Maria's recovery is accelerated by her husband and brother-in-law. This was discussed as the doctor's best case scenario, exept for one unexpected twist to the tale.
. . **The camera zooms in past dozens of flower arrangements and foil balloons to focus on Michael and Maria. Maria holds a tiny infant wrapped in a pink receiving blanket while Michael holds another baby in his arms, this one wrapped in blue. Both babies have smooth, pink skin and a slightly curly mop of brown hair mostly covered with matching tye-dye caps. Michael grins proudly and kisses the top of his sleeping son's head as Maria glances at the camera and smiles, waving her cooing daughter's hand gently, matching emerald eyes shining in the light.
"Wave hello, Delaney. Michael, baby, hold Dylan up to the camera." Michael rolls his eyes in mock annoyance, but does as he is told, carefully sifting the boy as the camera focuses in on his tiny face, hazel eyes fluttering open as he begins to suckle on his fist.**
Dylan Michael Guerin escaped doctor's notice by hiding behind his mother's ribcage while his twin sister, Delaney Maria Guerin, was being carefully monitored. Both babies are in perfect health. The doctors thank Michael's inhanced immune system for the lack of injuries to the twins. Since the appearance of Dylan, Dr. Sakariya is no longer worried about the small size of Delaney, which was the source of much worry about the infant's health while in vitro. By the end of the week, Michael will be able to take his new family home for the first time.
