Maggie (part one)
(Liz’s Roof-Night. She is writing in her journal) V.O.: You know, ever since last September, my life has totally been out of control. Over the past months, I have been frantically reaching for the little thread of control that still hangs overhead. I always thought that if I could grab that one little thread, then I could start the quilt over, one stitch at a time. And I thought I had just reached that little thread when everything spun out of control again.
(in school-hallways. Max is walking in the hallway and Liz runs to catch up)
Liz: Max!
Max: Oh, hey Liz.
She links her arm through his.
Liz: Hey. Can I ask you a favor?
Max: Anything.
Liz: Do you remember Maggie Nelson?
Max: You mean that girl who used to hang out with you and Alex and Maria? Yeah. She was pretty cool. She moved in the Freshman year, right?
Liz: Yeah. Well, we’ve been writing each other since then. You know her mother died, that’s why she moved. Anyway, she’s moving back to Roswell. I talked to her yesterday, and she asked me to pick her up at the airport. My parents won’t lend me the car, and Maria’s is in the shop. Do you think you could drive me?
Max: Sure. I’d like to see her.
Liz: Thanks. She’s coming in today. Meet me outside after school.
Max: Great. See you in Bio.
They kiss and part.
Credits
(Library-study hall. Liz and Maria are talking over open books.)
Maria: I’m so excited that Maggie’s coming back. It’s even better that she’s coming a week before her dad and brothers. We have to remind her what it’s like to live with women!
Liz: I can’t believe my parents let her stay with us!
Maria: I can. They probably miss her more than we do. Parents always loved her.
Liz: Everybody loved her.
V.O: I was so excited that Maggie was coming back. Back in grade school me and Alex and Maria and her were inseparable.
(Outside school. Max is waiting for Liz. She runs up and they jump into the jeep.)
Liz: Good thing there was a half day.
Max: Gotta love those teacher’s conferences.
Liz: So how well did you know Maggie?
Max: She made it her personal mission to get me to come out of my shell. She always got pretty frustrated with me.
Liz: I can imagine. She always hated secrets.
Max: No Liz. I’m sorry.
Liz: I know. I can’t believe I even thought about it.
Max smiles apologetically at her and takes her hand and then looks back a the road.
Max: We should get to Albuquerque just in time for her flight.
(Flight gate. Max and Liz are looking at the screens.)
Liz: It should be on time. Which means now.
Max walks over to the information desk.
Max: Excuse me. Hi. I was wondering if flight 314 out of Minnesota has gotten in yet.
Attendant: Yes. But we are having a problem of missing luggage. It should be sorted out in a few minutes.
Max: Thank you.
They sit down in the seats.
Liz: The suspense is killing me. I wonder if she has changed at all.
Max: Wouldn’t you be able to tell from the letters? Besides, she should be coming out soo- I mean now.
Liz and Max stand up while people flood out of the gate. A girl comes out and look inquisitively around her.
Liz: Maggie!
Maggie: Oh my god, Lizzy!
She runs over and drops her bags. They hug.
Liz: Maggie, you remember Ma-
Maggie: Oh my god! This can’t be scrawny little Max Evans, can it?
Max: Hi Maggie.
Maggie hugs him then holds him at arm’s length.
Maggie: Well, I must say, you certainly have grown up! Girlfriend?
Max looks at Liz.
Max: Well, actually . . .
Maggie: Omigod! You two? Together? (smacks Liz playfully) Why didn’t you tell me?
Liz: Because I knew you would find some reason to smack me.
Maggie looks offended.
Maggie: I’m not that bad, am I?
Liz: You almost gave Alex a cuncussion once because he didn’t tell you when he got his first kiss.
Maggie: Well, who’s he suppose to tell if not his best friends?!!
Max: I hate to break up the little reminiscing fest, but we should get your bags.
Maggie: Right.
(Jeep. Liz and Maggie are in the back talking. Max is listening and smiling.)
Maggie: So, any couples that I should know about?
Liz: Kyle and Vicky Delaney got together.
Maggie: I always knew those two would get together. Both shallow and conceited.
Liz: Well, Vicky is. Kyle is actually being pretty cool. Except for the time he got Max drunk.
Max: (Playfully) Don’t even go there!
Maggie: Max? Drunk? Okay, details!
(Jeep pulling in front of the Crashdown. Max hops out and helps the girls down. They go in.)
Everyone: Surprise!
Maggie: Oh my god!
She walks over to Alex and Maria. She punches both of them and then hugs them tight.
Maggie: How dare you! (laughing)
Maggie does hugging rounds.
Alex: Let’s Paaaaar-tay!
Alex’s band sets up and they play.
(Some night. Everyone is gone. Maria, Alex, Maggie, and Liz are cleaning up.)
Maggie: Awesome party you guys. You spoil me.
Alex: Oh, that’s just a ruse to get you to trust us.
Maggie: Okay, I saw some definite sexual tension between you and some several nice-yet-not so obvious choices. Maria, what’s with Guerin? Alex, Liz, the Evans’ twins? What?
Liz: Um
Maria: Uh
Alex: Er
Maggie: Okay, so I guess the idea of Max and Liz isn’t so crazy. I mean, you two have been gaga over each other since the third grade, not to mention that he’s gotten pretty cute. And the fact that they made me physically sick the whole way down here convinced me too. But Isabel the Ice Queen? Michael the Rebel Without a Cause? I mean don’t get me wrong, I love them all dearly, but Alex with Isabel? Michael with Maria? Come on!
Maria: I thought I talked a lot.
Maggie: There’s a lot to talk about.
Maria: It could so could not happen with Michael. Don’t think I haven’t tried. But that guy has a serious case of C.P.
Alex: C.P.?
The girls: Commitment Phobia.
Alex: Okay, where can I get this “Language of Girls” hand book?
Maggie: Alex, don’t hold out on me, buddy.
Alex: Isabel? No way.
Maggie: Why not? I mean under the hard exterior, there’s a really good person.
Alex: Don’t I know it. But like you said, she’s the most popular girl in the school, and I’m a big garage-band playing, computer hacking, not-so-hot high school dork.
Maggie: I happen to think you are very sexy Mr. Whitman. Besides, I think she digs you too.
Alex: Really? I mean, no way, no how, uh-uh. I mean she’s so-
Liz, Maria, and Alex: Different.
(School-hallways. Maggie is looking for her locker and stops by one next to Max)
Maggie: Looks like we’re locker neighbors.
Max: Yeah. I guess so.
Maggie: Still in your shell I see, Max. Well, I’m going to get that secret out of you, yet.
She pokes him playfully in the chest.
Max: Believe me, many people have tried. What do you have for first period?
Maggie: (consults her schedule) Geometry. My favorite subject.
Max: Oh yeah, loads of fun.
Maggie: Don’t play the normal-teenager game with me Max. I know you’re some kind of freaky genius. Straight A’s and not a single minus sign.
They start waking down the hall.
Max: School isn’t that hard. People make it hard.
Maggie: That’s just a genius thing to say!
They walk into the classroom and sit down. Camera shows a sequence of Max and school and shows Max sharpen his pencil with his hand while Maggie is watching. She is very surprised.
(hallways. Max is walking in the hall and Maggie runs to catch him)
Maggie: Yo! Max! I need to talk to you.
They go into the band room. Max smiles.
Maggie: What’s so funny?
Max: Just a memory.
Maggie: Alright, I’m probably mistaken at this and if I am I’m about to ruin everything that I’ve worked for, so I’m just going to come out and ask, so don’t think I’m crazy or anything.
Max: I can see why you and Maria are friends.
Maggie: Are you an alien?
Max: What?
Maggie: I saw you in history. You sharpened your pencil with your hand.
Max: Okay, my turn. You were apparently hallucinating or something, but why did you automatically jump to the conclusion that I’m an alien?
Maggie gives him a long look, as if trying to decide something. She walks over to the wall and places her hand on it.
Maggie: What’s your favorite color?
Max: Why?
Maggie: Just answer.
Max: Yellow.
Maggie: Yellow.
Maggie concentrates and turns all the walls yellow, then proceeds to turn them back.
Max: Oh my god.
Maggie: Okay, if you aren’t than you can NOT tell anyone. Understand? Anyone!
Max: Can you meet me at he Crashdown 4:00? I need to talk something over with a few people.
(Eraser room. Max and Michael are already there. Isabel slips in.)
Isabel: I’m finding myself in here a lot with you two.
Max: I got some big news. We’re not the only aliens here.
Michael: We know, Maxwell. Nasedo. Is that all you dragged us in here for?
Max: No. I mean Maggie.
Isabel: Maggie? An alien. Yeah right. I like her and all, but she really doesn’t fit into the whole persona.
Max: She turned the walls of the bandroom yellow!
Michael: Does she know anything? About us?
Max: I don’t know. She’s meeting us at the Crashdown at four. She said to bring anybody that knew.
Isabel: Which means Liz, Maria, and Alex.
Michael: Should we get them involved in this?
Isabel: I guess they have the right to know.
Max: They’re working after school. I’ll fill in Liz in bio, Michael has shop with Maria, and Is, don’t you have English with Alex?
Isabel: Yeah, I’ll tell him.
Michael: I still can’t believe it. Maggie Nelson.
Max: I know. But, I guess I’m a little relieved it’s not somebody like Paulie Thompson.
Michael: Now you’re giving me nightmares.
(Crashdown. Liz and Maria are waiting tables and Maggie is sitting at a table waiting for Max. Max, Isabel, and Michael walk in and sit down with Maggie.)
Maggie: They know?
Max: They are.
Maggie: Well.
Michael: Um.
Max: Where do we start?
Maggie: I guess I will. I was found about two days after I came out of the pod, two miles from the crashsite. I guess the force of the crash propelled me there.
Max: Two miles from the crashsite?
Maggie: Yeah, my pod was actually buried. I had to dig my way out. I was found by this old Indian man who took me to the side of the road where he knew a car would find me. Some old woman found me and took me to the orphanage. I was adopted about a month later. The rest is history.
Max: We came out a ways from the crash too. Me and Iz’s parents found us by the side of the road. Michael was found by some guy. He was put directly into foster care.
Michael: A while back I gained control of my own life. . . You aren’t Nasedo, are you?
Maggie: Who?
Max: There’s another alien. He’s-
Maggie: You mean the guy that’s been leaving carnage across America the past forty years? No, but I know a lot about him.
Max: Bet we know more.
Maggie: Did you know that he’s committed more than fifty murders across the United States?
She goes into her backpack and pulls out a folder. Inside are police photos and news clippings. All are about mysterious killings with the only evidence being a silver handprint.
Maggie: I know the proof isn’t rock solid. I’m still trying to hold on to the hope that he was trying to help those people, heal them, but couldn’t. But the evidence is pretty incriminating.
Isabel: Where did you get this?
Maggie: The internet. You think I’ve been friends with Alex Whitman for five years and haven’t gotton anything out of it?
Isabel: Well, Max was right. We know more than you.
Michael: There’s this guy called River Dog at the reservation. He knew Nasedo.
Maggie: Can I meet him?
Michael: Down girl. We’ll take you tomorrow. It’s really important that he meets you.
Maggie: Now to the juicy stuff. Does anyone else know?
Max: The thing is, we don’t really-
Maggie: -trust me yet. That’s cool. Very good, actually. You can tell me whenever you’re ready.
Isabel: You?
Maggie: No one knows.
Isabel: No one? Your brothers, dad?
Maggie: No one. It kills me to keep it from them, but come on. I mean my dad works at the Los Alamos lab. If anyone would want to turn me into a lab rat, he would. Even if I am his daughter. And the first thing Brad would do is tell all his friends at school. Tyler’s too young to understand, and Nick has enough problems. As for friends, it’s been killing me to keep it from Liz and Maria and Alex, but I don’t want to drag them into this.
Michael: Too late.
Maggie: Excuse me?
Max: They know. They’re the only ones.
Maggie: I’m not sure if I’m furious or relieved. (pauses) It was that gunshot, wasn’t it? The one that went off here. Some idiot posted it on the internet.
Max: The gun went off and hit Liz. I healed her. She told Maria. We all kind of told Alex.
Maggie: Wow. Liz!
Liz walks over and looks a little uneasy.
Maggie: I just hope you don’t think I’m a monster.
Liz smiles.
Liz: Of course I don’t.
Maggie: Good.
Max: Uh-
Maggie: I gotta do some homework.
Isabel: I can’t believe we just had this conversation, and you can think about school!
Maggie: I have to. My grades weren’t so hot at my last school, so I have to pick them up so I can hold my status as the golden child.
Liz: You mean you actually work at that?
Maggie: Hey, you think perfection comes easily?
Everyone laughs.
(Maggie’s house-living room. Maggie is spoon-feeding her disabled brother. There is a knock at her bedroom window that she can barely hear. She walks in and opens it. It is Max.)
Max: Hey.
Maggie: Nice entrance.
Max: Yeah, we don’t really like doors. Too traditional.
Maggie: Come in.
He enters. They walk back into the living room.
Maggie: This is Nick. Nick this is my friend Max.
Nick: Your boyfriend? (Slurred)
Maggie: No. That’s only slightly disgusting. Come on. It’s time for your nap.
Maggie wheels him into the other room.
Maggie: I’ll be right out.
Nick: Bye Max.
Max nods and sits down on the couch. He sees a folder and opens it. Inside are sketches of the constellation that he comes from. He doesn’t see Maggie come in.
Maggie: That constellation. It’s where we’re from isn’t it?
Max looks at her and nods. Maggie sits down.
Maggie: I would sit outside at night, and look at the stars. I wanted to see if any of them connected with me. They didn’t. Until I came to Roswell. The constellation is at a different angle here. If we find away to get home, it needs to be from the old chipper mill. That’s where it’s the strongest.
Max: Do you want to get to. . . home?
Maggie: I want to know where I come from, who I am. But when it comes to leaving, for good, I just don’t think I can go through with it. There are people here that need me. Dad is only home on the weekends, literally. He sleeps in his office. You saw Nick, Max. Brad’s old enough to babysit sometimes, but to take care of Nick and Tyler full time? No.
Max: Listen, me and Isabel and Michael, we want to trust you. But, we already know that there’s an alien out there that is a murderer, and he can be anybody. We just have to know that your intentions are good.
Maggie: What are you suggesting?
Max: Do you think that I could connect with you? To make sure?
Maggie: That’s a lot to ask Max.
Max: I know. And you can say no.
Maggie: There’s things inside of me that I haven’t shared with anyone. But I’ll do it. If you’ll let me do it to you.
Max: You mean connect with me?
Maggie: How do I know you’re not evil? Besides, I want to know what you guys have been through. How you felt. What you learned. I want to be a member of this special little group that you have. I know I will probably never be as close to you guys as you are to each other, but I want to take a step in that direction.
Max: Okay.
Maggie: Okay.
Maggie hold out her arm, and Max places his hand on it and they look at each other for a second, then pull away, confused.
Maggie: You go first.
Max: Right.
They assume the position again, and the camera shows a sequence of Maggie, meeting and playing with Liz, Maria, and Alex, getting adopted, Nick being born, Tyler being adopted, and her mother’s funeral. Max pulls away and looks at her in a pained way.
Max: I’m sorry.
Maggie: Yeah. Me, too. Okay, my turn.
They assume the position for the last time and the camera shows a sequence of Max, particularly him with Liz. Also includes the cave, the issue with Michael, saving his mother, Topolsky, and playing with Isabel. Maggie pulls away looking shocked.
Maggie: I feel like I’m in a really cheesy romance novel.
Max looks embarrassed and Maggie gives him a long look.
Max: What?
Maggie: You know, of all the guys Liz could have fallen for, I’m glad it was you.
Max smiles.
(Indian reservation. The Jeep pulls up and stops. Max, Isabel, Michael, and Maggie get out. They see Eddie and walk up to him.)
Michael: Hey Eddie. We’re looking for River Dog.
Eddie eyes Maggie.
Eddie: Who’s that?
Max: A friend. She’s, um, different, too.
Eddie: River Dog is at the cave. You can find your way?
Max: Yes. Thanks.
(Cave. River Dog is looking at the wall. Max, Isabel, and Michael walk in. Maggie is not with them.)
Max: Hey, River Dog.
RD: Hello.
Michael: Have we got a surprise for you!
Isabel: We found another one. Another one of us.
RD: Another?
Max: Yes.
RD: Where is it?
Maggie: She. Right here, sir. (Sees him) Oh my god! You’re the Indian!
RD: And you’re the child.
Isabel: Am I sensing a teary reunion?
Maggie: This is the Indian. The one that took me to the side of the road. (turn back to RD) If you knew Nasedo, why didn’t you take me to him? Back here? You knew I was different. You knew before I did.
RD: I knew Nasedo was dangerous. Especially to a child. I knew you would be more safe in the hands of a human.
Maggie: What... What was he like?
RD: He was good to those he trusted. With a fiery temper. Like you. (Nodding at Michael)
Maggie: Why am I not surprised? (Walks to the wall)They’re so familiar. Do you know what they mean?
Isabel: We’re working on it.
Maggie: The constellation.
Max: We call it the Balance.
Maggie: That’s a good name for it, but it’s actually called the Hyades.
Max: You ready to go?
Maggie: Sure. Whatever.
(Crashdown. Max is sitting across from Maggie. His back is facing the door.)
Maggie: So what happens now?
Max: Act normal, I guess.
Maggie: I thought finding someone like me would be the biggest revelation of my life, but now I‘m just disappointed. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I am really happy I found you guys, and happy that Liz and Maria and Alex know, but you guys don’t know much more than I do.
Max: I’m sorry.
Maggie: It’s not your fault.
Topolsky walks in.
Maggie: Oh my god. Back room, Max, NOW. Take Liz with you.
Max: What’s going on?
Maggie: GO! And what ever you do, don’t turn around.
Max gets up and rushes to the back room, grabbing Liz on the way. Topolsky walks up to Maggie.
Topolsky: You look about the right age. Do you know where Max Evans is? Or Liz Parker? I was told they might be here.
Maggie: And you are-?
Topolsky: Kathleen Topolsky. Do you know where they are?
Maggie: Nope. Don’t know them all that well. New here. Did you say Topolsky? Weren’t you a teacher or something here in Roswell?
Topolsky: Guidance Counselor.
Maggie: Would you mind sitting down? I’d like to ask you a few questions.
Topolsky: Why?
Maggie: I’m on the school newspaper. I’m doing an in-depth story on the students of Roswell High. I’m hoping to sell it to the Roswell Weekly.
Topolsky: Okay. I’m always willing to help students.
She sits down.
Maggie: Awesome. Let me just get my recorder.
She takes out a small recorder and places it on the table and turns it on.
Maggie: Are you ready?
Topolsky: Ready.
Maggie: Why exactly did you leave Roswell?
Topolsky: I found that the students were getting too personal.
Maggie: Isn’t that what a guidance counselor is suppose to do? Get in to student’s lives, find out what makes them tick?
Topolsky: I’m suppose to understand them. They’re not suppose to understand me.
Maggie: So it’s okay to get into their life, but not okay for them to get into yours?
Topolsky: These children were very disturbing. One tried to hack into my computer.
Maggie: One might ask, with these children doing such “disturbing” things, wouldn’t they need more guidance than ever?
Topolsky: I found myself in an uncomfortable position.
Maggie: Usually people get uncomfortable when they have something to hide.
Topolsky: It’s not about having things to hide. It’s about privacy.
Maggie: Miss Topolsky, there’s a crazy rumor going around school, that you left because a student found out that you’re an FBI agent. Would you like to put an end to that one?
Topolsky: Yes. I would. I was a school guidance counselor. Nothing more.
Maggie: But isn’t also true, Miss Topolsky, that you masqueraded as a geometry teacher, before revealing that you were a guidance counselor? Would you like to explain your reasons for doing that?
Topolsky: No comment. This interview is at an end.
She gets up and storms out of the Cafe. Maggie gets up and goes into the backroom. Max and Liz are very close and Max has lipstick all over his face.
Maggie: I should have known that you guys would take advantage of this.
Max: What was that all about?
Maggie: Topolsky. She’s back.
(Maggie’s house. Everyone is there.)
Alex: This can’t be. We got rid of her.
Liz: How did you know that it was Topolsky? You’ve never seen her before.
Maggie: Yes, I have.
Michael: Max, Isabel, and I agreed that Max should connect with Maggie, to make sure that she was trustworthy.
Maggie: I would only do it if I could connect with Max as well. So I could know what you guys had been through. By the way, I need to talk to you later, Lizzy.
Michael: Hello? Back to Topolsky.
Alex: So what do we do about her?
Maggie: She forgot her quest momentarily. I kind of intimidated her. Anyway, I kind of got the impression that she wasn’t commando anymore. She was angrier. Out for blood. My theory is that she was fired because everyone thought she was wacko, and is out for revenge.
Isabel: I wouldn’t be surprised.
Maria: I really don’t like that woman. And may I also point out, that I didn’t like that woman from the beginning.
Michael: Goodie for you, Maria.
Maggie: So, our choices proceed as thusly: One: We kill her, Two: make her think we’re going to kill her, or Three: convince her that we’re not aliens.
Max: I think it’s too late to do the latter.
Isabel: Killing her would definitely be kind of drastic.
Liz: So we threaten her?
Max: Sounds like the safest bet.
Maria: Woah, woah, woah! Has anyone stopped to think that this little extra-curricular activity is illegal? She could turn us in to Valenti, or worse her FBI goons. Valenti would have our heads on sticks, and the FBI would have you chopped into about three thousand separate pieces before the weekend is out.
Maggie: Stop being so pessimistic. Valenti has a soft spot for where you mom is concerned, and I don’t think the FBI would let Topolsky get two words in before cutting her off. At least we have a plan.
Maria: Which brings me to my next question. What is the plan?
Everyone looks at each other.
(Maggie’s room. Liz and Maggie are in there. They are in their pajamas)
Liz: Thanx for letting me stay over tonight. I guess it’s a little scary with Topolsky on the loose.
Maggie: Anytime. It’s too bad that Maria couldn’t stay over.
Liz: Do you think the plan will work? It’s pretty dangerous.
Maggie: Yeah. Well, I feel pretty horrible about putting you and Max is the most dangerous position.
Liz: Hey, don’t worry about that. We’re the ones that she’s after the most.
Maggie: So, Lizzy. Are you gonna tell me about Max or do I have to tickle it out of you?
Liz: You don’t know where I’m tickelish.
Maggie: Liz, I’ve knows you since the fourth grade. I know exactly where you’re ticklish.
Liz: Oh yeah?
Maggie reaches over and tickles Liz on her shoulder.
Maggie: Yeah. Just about everywhere.
Liz: Max is, is, well, I can’t even think of a word to describe Max.
Maggie: I can think of thirty and I don’t even like him like that.
Liz: It’s just, when I’m with him, everything stops. And it just feels right.
Maggie: Well, let me tell you something, Max feels exactly like that times a thousand.
(Jeep. Max is driving and Liz is in the passenger side. Max is talking on the phone with Maggie.)
Max: Are you sure she’ll be there?
Switches to Maggie. She is driving in her car with Alex and Michael.
Maggie: Almost positive. I’m pretty sure she’ll take you to the desert. We’ll follow.
Switches to Max.
Max: Are you sure she’ll do what you think she’ll do?
Maggie: I’m pretty good at figuring out people’s motives. Good luck, man.
Max: Thanks. (turns to Liz) You ready?
Liz: As ready as I’ll ever be. this plan is pretty dangerous, don’t you think?
Max: Of course it is. Maggie came up with it.
Liz: I’m scared, Max.
Max: Me, too. I’m glad I have you with me, or I’d be peeing in my pants.
Liz: Ditto.
The jeep pulls up to a old coffee joint. Max helps Liz out and they walk inside hand in hand. Topolsky is inside. They walk up to her.
Max: Miss Topolsky! It’s good to see you back. Maggie told us that you were looking for us.
Topolsky: Come outside, will you?
Liz: Of course, Miss Topolsky.
They walk outside, and Topolsky sticks a gun barrel in Max’s back and grabs Liz’s hair.
Liz: Don’t shoot him.
Topolsky: How stupid do you think I am? Get in the car.
She forces them into a black car. Camera pans over to Maggie, Michael, and Alex parked in car watching them.
Alex: That was suppose to happen, right?
Maggie: Don’t worry. Everything’s going according to plan.
Michael: Where’s Maria and Isabel?
Maggie: Where I think Topolsky is taking them. The key to this plan is to get Topolsky unconscious. Liz and Max might not be able to do it alone.
(the desert. There are no roads but Topolsky drives over it anyway. She gets out and yanks Max and Liz out. She points the gun at them.)
Max: Miss Topolsky, just calm down.
Topolsky: You little brats lost me my job.
Liz: It’s just a job. We didn’t mean to.
Topolsky: Of course it wasn’t all you. That pip-squeak Alex Whitman. And Guerin of course. Not to mention your sister. You all ruined my life!
Max: We didn’t mean to.
Topolsky: Who to kill first?
She moves her gun back and forth between Max and Liz. She stops on Liz.
Topolsky: Of course. It will be torture for the boy. (cocks the gun) This time not being able to do anything.
Max: No!
Max hurls himself at Topolsky. Topolsky hits him with the gun. He passes out.
Topolsky: Shame. I would have liked to have him watch it.
Camera shows Isabel and Maria in the bushes watching. Isabel focuses f the gun and concentrates. The gun is thrown from her hand. Liz run up and begins to struggle with Topolsky. She manages to get a hold of a stick and knock Topolsky over the head with it. She passes out. The rest of them run up and Maggie kneels next to Max and heals him. He wakes up.
Max: (to Liz) Are you okay?
Liz nods. She walks over and kisses him.
Liz: Thank you.
Maggie: Okay, okay, you guys can take it to the eraser room later.
Maria: So what’s the next part of the plan?
Maggie: You guys know about the dream walking, don’t you?
Liz: Dream walking? Excuse me?
Max: It’s another power. We can go into peoples’ dreams and observe.
Maggie: I can’t believe you hadn’t told ‘em. That’s our coolest power.
Michael: Hel-lo. She’s not going to stay like that forever.
Maggie: Okay, anyway. I think that we can draw you guys in with us.
Maria: Like into the dream?
Maggie: Yeah.
Liz: How?
Maggie: I think we can kind of reverse the power, like Max reversed the connection.
Michael: I’m not sure if I can do that.
Maggie: You won’t have to. Just concentrate on dream walking and I’ll do the rest. Aliens! Assume contact!
The aliens touch Topolsky’s face.
Maggie: Okay, um, join hands. Make sure all of the humans are touching at least one alien.
All of them join hands leaving Michael and Maggie at the ends. Maggie holds out her hand to him.
Maggie: Get ready to rock!
Michael: And roll.
Michael takes Maggie’s hand.
Max: Okay, just relax your bodies and try to blank everything out of your mind except Topolsky’s face. Focus on that.
They all close their eyes. When they open them they are in a field. Topolsky is not in sight.
Maggie: Do any of you see her?
Liz: This is totally wild.
Michael snaps his fingers in Liz’s face.
Michael: Liz! Focus!
Liz: I’m focused, I’m focused. I don’t see her anywhere.
A little girl walks up to them.
LG: Who are you?
Maggie: What’s your name, honey?
LG: Kathleen.
Maggie stumbles back
Maggie: Oh my god, it’s Topolsky.
She turns her back on the little girl.
Maggie: I can’t scare a little girl. That’d be like, a horrible to do. She’s a little kid!
Topolsky: Not anymore.
Maggie spins back around. Topolsky is standing there, now full grown.
Isabel: This is why I hate the subconscious.
Maggie: So, Topolsky. I hear you got it out for my friends. See, I don’t like that. I don’t like it one bit.
Michael comes up and stands next to Maggie. They get right in her face.
Michael: See these people? They’re my family. And nobody threatens my family.
Maria: What should we do with her?
Max: I say we kill her.
Maria: Well, that goes with out saying. But how?
Alex: We could do what we did with Williams.
Isabel: You mean chop her up into bite size pieces to feed to the coyotes?
Maggie Oh, I like the coyotes.
Isabel: That was too messy. I got blood all over my new shoes.
Maggie: Yeah, Williams was a bleeder.
Max: Or we could just chop off all of her limbs and let the coyotes take care of her themselves.
Liz: Oh, they’d like that.
Topolsky: Don’t kill me.
Maggie: Why not? You have 20 seconds to convince us.
Topolsky: If I do, there will be more danger for you. They will know it was you who killed me.
Alex: Do you realize how painful it would be if we did decide to kill you?
Maggie: It would kind of feel a little like this.
She walks up to Topolsky and puts her hand right under her neck. Topolsky jumps back and cries out in pain. She lies on the ground with her eyes closed.
Maria: Is she dead?
Michael: Momentarily.
Topolsky wakes up and whimpers.
Max: Or it might feel like this.
He walks up to her and puts his hand on her stomach. She falls to her knees and then onto her face. She wakes up a moment later.
Maggie: Very well. We will spare your life.
Topolsky: Oh thank you.
Maggie: On one condition.
She kneels in really close to Topolsky’s face.
Maggie: You leave Roswell. You never come back. Never contact us, never tell anyone anything. Clear?
Topolsky: Crystal.
Maggie: Good. Just remember, guns really don’t hold a lot of meaning for us. (stands up and looks at the others) Time to go!
(Maggie’s house. Everyone is sitting around the table, talking and drinking hot co co.)
Maggie: Well, I’ll tell you one thing: Max has looked down the barrel of a gun way to many times.
(Tyler comes running in his feety pajamas.)
Tyler: Maggie! I had a night mare.
Maggie: You’re not the only one tonight. Do you want me to stay with you until you fall asleep?
Tyler nods. Maggie stands up and gathers Tyler up in her arms.
Maggie: Sorry you guys, but I have to cut the evening short. Can you show yourselves out?
Max: (stands up) Yeah.
Everyone stands and starts to leave. Maggie starts to walk into the bedroom.
Max: Hey Maggie! Nice job.
Maggie: (smiles) Thanks.
Camera shows Maggie tucking Tyler in to bed and reading him a story.
V.O.: I thought I had lost control. But maybe I never did. Maybe it was in the hands of somone else, someone who would take care of it. Or maybe it had just been dormant. But all I know is that as long as I have my friends, control is always by my side.
