Dear Journal,

The worst thing about loving someone is not being able to stop. No matter how many times Isabel hurts me, I can't just take away my feelings for her. And the thing that bothers me the most is that I know the minute she's in trouble, the minute she needs someone to protect her or to listen to her or to hold her I'll be there. I can't stop being there for her, its like I'm drawn to her. I love her and I can't have her. I'm just good old Alex Whitman, that guy that just keeps coming back for more abuse. And I can't stop.

Alex closed his journal and pulled his guitar onto his lap and began strumming a soft melody that had haunted him lately. It had come to him that day that Isabel had come to his house and they had kissed. It had been an incredible kiss, even though it had been for scientific reasons only.

He had watched her walk away and had called after her that he was available for any other experiments. He had closed the door and the melody had struck him. He had played it on his guitar and it had been perfect. It had described her perfectly.

The ups and the downs of the melody made him think about her moody cover that she kept up to protect herself, the soft quiet tones reminded him about her scaredness to let anyone in. And the bubbly intro made him think of her laugh. He had only heard it once or twice, but it was burned into his memory.

It was her soul. Every note, every chord was her, his Isabel. But he had no words. No words to go along with the music of Isabel.

Alex sighed and continued to play the song that brought him closer to untangling the emotions and personality of the women he would die for. Alex's graceful playing was interrupted by a twang as his eyes popped open and he scrambled for a piece of paper as the words flew into his mind. He scribbled for five minutes and then sat back to evaluate his work.

Alex smiled and combined the words and the music and was blown away by the result. If anything at all could break through Isabel's wall, this song would be it. Alex looked over at the alarm clock and smiled. He still had two hours before The Whits were do to perform at the Crashdown. Just enough time to alert the band and Maria of the changes in the performance.

Alex pulled his guitar case out of his closet and pulled on the leather jacket Maria had insisted he have, "You can't not have a leather jacket, it's part of a musicians wardrobe. We're not leaving this store until you at least try it on."

Alex smiled at the memory of his best friend standing in the doorway of the Thrift shop, arms crossed across her chest, glaring menacingly at him. Alex laughed and walked out of his house to his dad's Chevy and threw his guitar case in the trunk.

He pulled out of the driveway and drove as fast as he could in the old car to Maria's house. He ran up the steps to the door and pounded loudly on it.

Maria opened the door and her face paled at the sight of him breathless on her porch. "Oh god, Alex, is everything okay? Did something happen to Michael?"

Alex shook his head and caught his breath. "No... I'm fine, everything is fine, I just had an epiphany. I finished this song and I have to sing it tonight."

Maria smiled and said, "God, Alex, you come over and practically level my door and all because you want to sing a song?? It's your band, you can decide what happens at performances."

Alex smiled and nodded. "I know, I just-- I wanted to let you know. You know, so it wouldn't like be a last minute thing."

Maria smiled knowingly at him and nodded.

Alex blushed and looked at the ground.

Maria laughed and pulled him inside. "Come on, help me decide what to wear. I have to look just perfect."

Alex raised an eyebrow and Maria smacked him. "Don't even say it, you have your little obsession with Isabel. And Michael and I have our little on again off again thing, so just don't give me that look."

Alex grinned knowingly and she laughed and pulled her into her bedroom.

Maria's floor and bed were covered with discarded clothes and her dresser drawers were virtually empty. Alex smiled and waded through the sea of clothing. He noticed one piece of clothing in the bottom of her bottom drawer. He pulled it out and examined it. It was a red silk v-neck tank top that you tied in the back and it was gorgeous. He smiled and held it up in front of him. it was perfect.

"Maria, this is it."

Maria turned around and her eyes widened. "Oh god, Alex, you're right! Thank God you came over, I would never had found that on my own." Maria kissed him on the cheek and grabbed her black leather pants, and the shirt out of his hands and ran into the bathroom.

Alex smiled and began picking the clothes off her floor and hanging them up in her closet. Twenty minutes later her room was clean and she was still in the bathroom. Alex picked up a framed picture of Liz, Maria and himself at the Crashdown.

Alex chuckled and thought of the picture on Liz's desk that at one time had been the same photo. It had undergone some drastic changes, when Max had gotten drunk. Liz had never had him change it back.

Alex looked up as the door to the bathroom opened and Maria stepped out. Alex whistled and began singing the 'I'm too Sexy' song as Maria strutted from one end of the room to the other. They stopped when they heard clapping from the doorway.

Liz was smiling at her two friends and she was trying not to laugh. Alex smiled at her and decided that if she didn't let herself laugh she was gonna burst. He concentrated really hard and was rewarded when his ears began to wiggle.

Liz burst out laughing and Maria turned to see what Liz found so hilarious and started laughing along with her. Alex smiled, glad that he had made Liz laugh. She didn't laugh very much since she and Max had broken it off . Or rather, Max had broken it off with her. Alex knew how she felt and all he could do for his friend was hope that someday her and Max could be happy like normal teens.

Alex stopped his ears and checked his watch. "Well, ladies, I hate to interrupt this beautiful giggle fest but we need to be heading to the Crashdown."

Liz and Maria controlled their laughter and followed Alex down the hall and out to his car. Within minutes they were pulling up behind the Crashdown.

Alex let the girls out and pulled his guitar out of the trunk and headed into the Crashdown. The Parkers had moved the jukebox and set up a makeshift stage for them to perform on. People were already filtering in and Alex scanned the crowed for that one face he needed to be there more than anyone. She wasn't here.

He felt his heart fall and he couldn't help but think that maybe the song wouldn't work and that assuming she came she would leave with her wall stronger than ever.

The bell tingled and he looked up and felt his heart stand still. *God, she's beautiful. This song has to work.* Alex thought, locking eyes with her. She looked away after a few seconds and he continued hooking up his guitar.

A few minutes later Mr Parker climbed on the stage and spoke into the mike nervously, "Umm... Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Crashdown. Tonight we have a very talented band, The Whits, playing for us, so sit back relax, and enjoy the show."

Maria hugged Alex and smiled reassuringly at him and he walked onto the stage. The crowd quieted as he sat down on the single stool and closed his eyes. He filled his mind with images of her as he began singing in a sweet voice.

"I look into your eyes and I see the most beautiful sight
The stars from the heavens reflect in your eyes
and I know that I'm home, with you in my arms.
Your voice the voice of Aphrodite haunts me every day
Your golden hair and sparkling smile are forever in my thoughts
And I know that I'm safe with you here beside me..."

Isabel felt her chest close up as the sound of his voice filled the room. He was singing about her.

"Don't ask me why the stars seem brighter when you're with me
or why the Universe seems to stop for you and only you
All I know is that I'm useless without you
You're my world my heart my soul my everything..."

Isabel felt her eyes fill with tears and she heard his voice, heavy with emotion, calling to her, breaking through that wall she had so carefully constructed around her heart.

"I've followed you into your dreams and I'm never coming back
This world of yours eliminates all that I've seen before
And I'm at peace holding your hand
Everything is brighter here and its all because of you
You light up the world with your sweet innocence
And im happy knowing you love me..."

Alex opened his eyes and locked them onto Isabel, who looked back through teary eyes, and he was surprised when she held his gaze rather than looking away.

"Can you tell me why the stars are brighter with you
or why the Universe stops for you and only you
I guess it's something that I'll never know
But I don't care just as long as you're near
You're my world my heart my soul my everything
You're my world my heart my soul my everything
and I know that I'm home, with you in my arms.
And I know that I'm safe with you here beside me
And I'm at peace holding your hand
And I'm happy knowing you love me
You're my world my heart my soul my everything..."

Alex stopped singing and looked to where Isabel was sitting. She was gone. Alex sighed and looked down.

He was surprised when another person joined him on stage. Isabel gently lifted his face so that she looked him in the eyes and kissed him.

Alex pulled her into his arms and held her. The room filled with applause and whistles.

Isabel slowly, reluctantly, pulled back and smiled at him. Alex leaned his forehead against hers and smiled. He had succeeded and broken through her wall. He had his Isabel and nothing else mattered.

He walked off stage and walked over to where Max and Liz were sitting. They were looking deeply into each other's eyes and Isabel smiled at him. It looked as if they were back together again and that, that was the way it was going to stay.

Maria was on-stage singing and Michael was staring breathlessly at her, like she was a goddess. Alex smiled and tightened his arms around Isabel's waist. She smiled and he kissed her gently.

This was how it was meant to be. He was with the one person who could make him happy, and he was never letting her go.
