Maria looked at Michael.

He sat in the exact same position like last night. Hunched over a cherry cola, in the Crashdown, near her - but avoiding her.

Not looking her in the eyes when she took his order.

She knew he wanted to talk to her, just as she knew that he would never do so.

She saw him looking at her in the corner of her eye. She turned and looked at him, and caught his eyes in a brief moment before he looked back down at the table.

She had noticed his bloodshot eyes, and thought that it served him right for this whole Isabel’s-having-my-kid thing.

She smiled in a melancholy manner to herself and remembered when he stole her car in pursuit of the dome.

Hey, tell me everything you really want to say
Cause when I saw you last night at the palace,
You were hunched over your whiskey,
Avoiding me
Anyway, who do you think you are?
You used to borrow my car and drive through
The old city
Like a bastard prince who thought
He deserved the world
But something made me love you
I guess I was so naive
You were trusted with my love
And now you avoid me
You got busted fooling around
And now you ignore me
Truth is like fire in this town
To the prince with a paper crown...

And still, after putting her in so much heartache… she still loved him.

He was the prince in her fairytale.

The prince with a paper crown...

She looked at him. Would it have been any different if it had been a stranger?

By the way, do you even remember her name?

What hurt her the most, was that it was Isabel, the girl he always referred to as his sister.

She looked away as he stood up and walked to the door in that cat-like smooth motion he had.

You used to whisper like a cat
Now you hide from me like a nervous rat...

The door closed after him, and Maria looked after him as he crossed the dark street.

Why couldn’t he tell her the truth?

He had already told her so many secrets - shared so many of his truths with her, and only her.

And look what good it had done her, she thought to herself.

But she couldn’t blame him.

She still loved him.

But something made me love you
I guess I was so naive
You were trusted with my love
And now you avoid me
You got busted fooling around
And now you ignore me
Truth is like fire in this town
To the prince with a paper crown...

The End
