Michael looked up to the skies, searching for any sign of life, any sign that there might be a God, somewhere. But there was nothing, no birds, no clouds, just a white sky, the sun bleaching out all color. Why did she have to leave him? Why here, in this godforsaken desert? They were going to make each others lives better, together they were going to find a better life.
But now she was gone, gone to the angels, where she belonged in the first place. She never belonged on earth, not in Roswell at least. She was too perfect for this planet, for any planet. She was definitely too perfect for him. But he had given her all he had, all that he could. And she had loved him, he knew that.
“Fuck it all,” he hissed. He knew they couldn’t be together. He had always known. But he didn’t know that her death would be the deciding factor. If only he had been there. But if and buts never helped. They didn’t change anything.
“Maria,” he screamed, filling the desert air with the sound of her name, the most beautiful name in the world. And now he would never be able to call it again. He scream became almost a howl and he fell to his knees on the sand. Tears streamed down his face, and he wept. He wept for the loss of her and all the moments that they would miss, all the moments they had missed.
Michael buried his face in his hands and let the sun wash over his back. He wished he were dead too, he wished he were with her. “No you don’t,” he heard a faint whisper. He lifted his head and there before him was Maria, a shimmering light surrounding her.
“No,” he cried. “No,” he kept muttering, shaking his head. He felt a soft hand lift his chin. Only one person could touch like that. But she was dead, she was gone. Maria was not supposed to be here. These were tears for her, didn’t she know? Didn’t she realize what she had done to him?
“Michael,” she whispered. Her voice was light and airy, free of sorrow, free of pain. He longed for that liberty, where he no longer had worries, where there was no more sadness, only elation. “Michael, you have to move on.”
“How can I?” he spat. “How can I just pretend you never existed? How can I just pretend you were never here?” He looked through his veil of tears to see her staring at him with sympathy in her eyes. Damn it. He didn’t want her sympathy, she couldn’t know what it was like to lose the one you love.
“But I do know,” she cried. Why did he have to bring back all her pain? “I lost you at the same moment you lost me. We’re from different worlds now.”
“We always have been,” he spoke, reminding himself why they weren’t meant to be. “I should have…”
“You should have what, Michael? You did everything perfectly, I never regret a day of my life, not one spent with you,” she said, her own tears forming, tears of joy. Joy, what a joke, it wasn’t an emotion, it was a zenith, one not reachable by humans, or aliens for that matter. “You were perfection, you let me live.”
“And I let you die,” he yelled standing up to face her. She wrapped her arms around him, her body small compared to his, but she protected him. The light surrounding her glowed brighter and enveloped them both in its warmth and beauty.
“No, I lived, death is part of life,” she said in his ear. “I can not take away your pain, I can not be here to love you. But I do love you. And I know you love me. And that’s enough. But you have a life to live, a world to save. Now you can follow your destiny.”
“I will never be with Isabel,” he said. “She is not you.”
“I know, but who knows what will be around the corner. Now it’s time for letting go. Time to say goodbye. I will always be near you, and you will always have a piece of me with you.”
“I love you, Maria,” he sobbed. She brushed her lips across his, and he held her tight. She slipped from his arms like liquid, disappearing as silently as she had appeared.
“I love you,” he heard through the wind. A bird flew across his path, it’s wings making tiny sand storms. It was time to let go, it was time to live. For Maria.
