Time in Taos
Disclaimer: Luv 'em, don't own 'em. Except Maggie and Luke. They're mine.
Author's note: If you haven't read Maggie than you might be confused about who Maggie is, though you'll probably catch on pretty quick.
V.O.: Hi, I’m Liz Parker. A lot of days I wonder if things will ever go back to normal. Sometimes I want them too. To go back to my school girl, mama’s angel persona. But then I realize. That’s just boring.
(Crashdown. Liz and Maria are waiting tables. Max and Isabel and Michael and Alex are sitting at their regular booth, talking. Maggie rushes in obviously excited. She runs over to the booth and Maria and Liz run over with worried looks on their faces.)
Liz: Is everything okay?
Maggie: Everything is awesome. Perfect. Incredible.
Max: So are you going to tell us or just leave us in suspense for the whole day?
Maggie doesn’t answer.
Michael: Well?
Maggie: Hold on, I’m thinking.
Isabel hits her in her arm.
Maggie: Okay, okay. My family has this cabin up in Taos that’s been in the family for generations. Anyway, my dad got Spring vacation off and are taking Tyler and Brad to Minnesota for a guy’s bonding thing and Nick is going to this special camp for disabled kids. My dad said that if I was careful than I could bring my closest friends up there. You know who that means?
Maria: Oh my god! That sounds amazing! A whole week away from Roswell. (pauses) Hold on, what about mom? I doubt she’ll let me go on this little co-ed sleep-over.
Maggie: So don’t tell her it’s co-ed. And definitely do NOT tell her that Michael is coming. Two co-ed sleep-overs is two too many when parents are concerned.
Liz: I hate lying to my parents.
Maggie: I thought you would be used to it by now. Kidding. You’re a teenager. You’re entitled to at least on harmless lie.
Max: I think it sounds great. But is the cabin big enough for seven?
Maggie: Eight, actually. I already invited Luke.
Liz: Wow, getting pretty serious, huh?
Maggie: That is personal.
Isabel: Me and Max will call you tonight. I doubt we’ll have much of a problem with my parents. They like you.
Maria: Everybody does. It’s so damn annoying.
Maggie: Alex?
Alex: My dad probably won’t know I’m even gone. He just got a brand new computer that he won’t get off of till year 3000.
Maggie: So you’re covered.
Alex: Oh yeah. Taos Mountain here I come.
(Liz’s house. Liz is in the kitchen trying to convince her mom.)
Liz: Come on, mom. I thought you liked Maggie.
Mom: Of course I do. But I don’t like the thought of you all alone in the woods like that.
Liz: Mom, I’m almost seventeen. I need to learn how to take care of myself eventually.
Switch to Max and Isabel trying to convince their dad.
Max: But, dad. We’re almost seventeen.
Isabel: Besides, you like Maggie. You’re always saying what a responsible young woman she is.
Switches Back to Liz
Mom: But after your little escapade with Max . . .
Liz: Mom, this is different. You know where I am, and I’ll be with people who will protect me.
Switches to Maria trying to convince her mom
Maria: Liz and Alex will be there. And Maggie takes care of her brothers 24/7. She’ll know how to protect us.
Switches back to Liz
Mom: Well . . . okay. But you be careful.
Switches back to Max and Isabel
Phillip: Well, okay.
Switches back to Maria
Amy: Fine. Just be careful.
(Outside Maggie’s house. The jeep and Maggie’s car is parked outside loaded up with luggage. Everyone except Maggie is outside waiting. She comes out with her dad. She gives him a kiss.)
Maggie: Don’t worry dad. I’ll be careful. Take good care of the boys. (Turn toward the rest of the group) Okay, Max, Luke and Liz with me and Michael, Maria and Alex with Isabel in the jeep.
Max: You totally thought that out before hand, didn’t you?
Maggie: (wraps her arm around Luke’s waist) I thought certain people might want to be together. Okay, load ‘em up!
They all get in the cars.
(Outside the cabin. The cars drive up and everyone gets out and stretches.)
Maria: Okay, I thought the drive to Marathon was long.
Maggie: Well, we’re here. There are four room in the house, so we’ll need to double up. And NO couples to a room. It’s for your own good.
Liz: Darn.
They gather up the bags and walk inside. The cabin is very rustic and traditional and very homey. It is also very large.
Isabel: This place is like a mansion out of the old west.
Maggie: My family is catholic. They needed a lot of room.
Everyone spreads out in search of the perfect room. Maria and Liz room together. Isabel and Maggie, Alex and Luke, Max and Michael.
(Max and Michael’s room)
Maggie: No way.
Max: What?
Maggie: You two are together way too much. Mingle.
Max and Michael just grin and start unpacking.
Maggie: Totally hopeless!
(Living room. Everyone is sitting around drinking hot chocolate and laughing. To set the scene: The girls are on one side of the room and the guys are on the other.)
Alex: Okay it’s our turn. Um, okay, what’s the first thing you look for in a guy?
All the girls look at each other then back at the guys.
Girls: Eyes.
Max: Oh, come on. You can’t be serious.
Liz: Dead serious.
Luke: Okay, why?
Isabel: Let us explain. You can tell exactly what kind of person a guy is, just by their eyes. Girls too.
Maria: Let’s use Liz as an example: Eyes are large, which can signify innocense.
Maggie: Which is very Lizzy. But has anyone noticed how her eyes have gotten smaller since she started dating Max?
Liz swats at her and Max throws a pillow in her direction.
Maria: Can we focus at the experiment at hand? Notice that there are no bags, but a slight undertone below the eyes. This signifies a hardworking individual, who knows what she wants out of life.
Isabel: Which once again is very Liz.
Maggie: You’re forgetting the eyebrows. Well kept, yet very natural.
Isabel: This signifies a person who takes care of her appearance, but does not go overboard.
Maggie: Which in conclusion, describes Liz to the letter.
Alex: Where do you people learn this stuff?
Maggie reaches into her backpack and pulls out a book entitled Human Body, Human Mind.
Maggie: Read it, know it, live it.
Isabel: Okay, our turn. What to ask, what to ask.
Maria: Ooh, I got one. All right, guys always say that girls can never make up their mind, but actually it’s the other way around. Why the hell can guys never decide what they want from a relationship?
Michael eyes her suspiciously.
Michael: Maybe because the girl rushed into thing too fast.
Maggie: Maybe the girl wanted something more than making out in the eraser room.
Michael: Why does it have to be so complicated?
Maria: Why does it have to be difficult?
Maria and Michael glare at each other for a while, much to the discomfort of the rest of the group.
Maggie: Maybe it’s time for bed.
Max: Good idea.
Maggie: We should all get some sleep. I want to bring you guys somewhere tomorrow.
Michael: (tearing his eyes off Maria) Where?
Maggie: That’s a surprise.
Michael: Oh come on.
Maggie: Go to bed, Michael, and stop being such a jackass.
Michael: Yes Mommy.
Maggie: Very funny.
(The jeep and Maggie’s car driving up to Taos Pueblo. Instead of going through the front, Maggie drives around through the back waving at a guy in the parking lot. The jeep follows.)
Inside the jeep.
Liz: Where is she going?
Max: Got me. But she probably knows what she’s doing better than we do.
They hop out of the jeep and Maggie starts heading for some houses that are outside the pueblo.
Liz: I don’t think we’re suppose to go over there without paying.
Maggie: Don’t worry. Family and friends.
They all go to the largest of the houses and Maggie walks inside without knocking. An old Indian woman comes to the door.
Maggie: Hi, Reysita!
Maria: Reysita? Don’t they have Indian names like River Dog?
Maggie: Oh come on. Eddie?
Reysita: We all have Indian names. We are not suppose to share them with outsiders.
Michael: But doesn’t Maggie know?
Reysita: (indignantly) Maggie is not an outsider.
Reysita leaves the room and starts bustling around the kitchen. When she closes the door it reveals and old Indian man.
Maggie: Al! You scared me. How are you?
Al: (very quietly) I get by, I get by.
Maggie: We came for the dance tomorrow. Rey, will you be dancing?
Reysita: (from the kitchen) Not with these bones.
Al: Who are your friends, Maggie?
Maggie: Oh, I’m sorry. These are my friends Max, Michael, and Isabel. They’re different too.
Max: (Aside to Maggie) I thought you said nobody knew.
Maggie: They don’t. But they know I’m different from them. Just like River Dog.
Al: And the rest?
Maggie: Liz, Alex, Maria, and Luke.
Al: Nice to meet you.
Max: Likewise.
Maggie: Will you be chanting, Al?
Al: Yes.
Maggie: Okay, good. Now we’re going to the pueblo to shop.
Reysita: Come back for dinner!
They leave the house and start walking toward the pueblo.
Isabel: What did she mean, you’re not an outsider?
Maggie: After I was adopted I spent two years in Taos. Most of it in the pueblo. They taught me how to be human. I learned Tiwa before I learned English.
Luke: Say some.
Maggie says a short phrase in Tiwa.
Luke: What does it mean?
Maggie: It means, “The river keeps running over the stones.” They say it a lot here.
Liz: Why didn’t you speak it in there?
Maggie: Thought you might want to know what I was talking about. Wait till you see these shops. Cute as heck! Isabel, you’re sure going to have a field day.
Everyone gives her a strange look and they walk on.
(Maggie’s cabin. Everyone enters looking exhausted and the girls are carrying bags of trinkets.)
Maria: My feet are killing me.
Isabel: Ditto. And I’m stuffed. That food was good.
Michael: (bows to Maria) Let me carry you to bed, madam.
With that, he scoops up Maria in his arm and walks up the stairs. The others are left staring.
Liz: Who was that?
Maggie: You know, I would say that he had been taken over by aliens, but that wouldn’t really be appropriate.
Isabel: Why don’t the rest of us get rides to our rooms? That’s not really fair.
The rest of the guys look at each other and back at the girls. Then each of them scoops up his respective girl and carries her up the steps.
(Isabel and Maggie’s room. Alex comes in with Isabel in his arms and lays her down on her bed. Isabel looks at him, amazed)
Isabel: Well, you’re stronger than you look.
Alex: (joking) It’s all your fault. I had to buff up if I would ever have a chance with you.
Isabel kisses him sweetly on the lips.
Isabel: No you didn’t.
Alex: (looking shocked) Where’s Luke with Maggie anyway?
Isabel: I’m getting the feeling that he’s not exactly taking her back to her room.
Alex: (grins) You girls have a plan?
Isabel: Yep. No sex, but lots of cuddles. She gets under the covers and holds them open for him.
Alex: Shouldn’t we get our night clothes on?
Isabel: Takes too long.
Alex climbs under the covers and puts his arm around her. She lays her head on his chest.
(Alex and Luke’s room. Luke walks in with Maggie and lays her down on the bed. He looks a little uncomfortable.)
Luke: I guess I could go sleep on the couch.
Maggie: No. Stay.
She walks in the bathroom ajoined to her room, picking up her pj’s on the way.
Maggie: (from the bathroom) Go get your pj’s.
Luke: Right.
He leaves the room and comes back a second later with sweatpants and a t-shirt in his hand. Maggie walks out in her plaid flannels and motions to the bathroom.
Maggie: All yours.
Luke: Thanks.
He goes in the bathroom. Maggie gets under the covers to wait for him. He comes out and gets awkwardly under the covers as well. Maggie turns her back to him and he spoons her from behind.
(Liz and Maria’s room. Max comes in with Liz and sets her down on the bed.)
Liz: Are you going to stay?
Max: Do you want me to?
Liz: Always. I mean, if you want to.
Max: Well, I think we should just choose either way.
Liz: I’d like you to stay. Just to cuddle.
Max: That sounds perfect.
He gets under the covers with her and after kissing her goodnight, puts both arms around and they fall asleep.
(Max and Michael’s room. Maria is already on the bed and Michael looks at her gruffly.)
Michael: Well, goodnight.
Maria: Michael, wait.
He turns back around.
Maria: Stay?
Michael swallows had and gets in the covers with her.
Michael: We can’t-
Maria: I know. This is perfect.
Michael nods and faces her pulling her into a lie-down hug.
(Next morning, Michael and Max’s room. Maria wakes up facing Michael and smiles. He wakes up and smiles back)
Maria: I hear noises downstairs.
Michael: (pulls her closer on starts kissing her neck.) Mmm-hmm.
Maria: (getting distracted) We should go down. Maggie’s taking us to the dances today.
Michael: (pulling away) Right.
They both get out of bed and walk downstairs. Max, Luke, Liz, Alex, and Isabel are sitting down at the table eating a huge breakfast. Maggie pokes her head out of the kitchen.
Maggie: Hey sleepy heads. Sit down and have some breakfast.
Max: Wait till you taste all this stuff. Man, this girl can cook!
Maria: Is there anything that you can’t do?
Maggie: Well, I can’t speak Japanese very well, and oh, I can’t play tennis.
Luke: And that’s it. You’re perfect.
Michael: Ew. That was the cheesiest line that I’ve heard.
They sit down and continue to eat.
(the Pueblo. The group comes in through the front this time, put doesn’t have to pay. The dance hasn’t started yet, and they are just mingling around.)
Max: So why are you so eager for us to see the dances?
Maggie: I want to see if you feel it too.
Isabel: Feel what?
Maggie: Shh. They’re starting.
The drummers begin to chant and the dancers come out from behind a building. The aliens seem mesmerized by the dancing.
Max: Oh my god.
Michael: I know that. The dancing, the chants.
Isabel: Why is it so familiar?
Maggie: We all feel it. Have you ever been to a dance at the Mesa Laka reservation?
Max: No.
Maggie: Do you think it’s from Nasedo? Maybe he went from pueblo to pueblo because it was familiar to him.
Max: Maybe.
Maggie: Let’s go talk to Rey. If anyone would know, it’s her.
Maria: Should we wait for Al to finish?
Maggie: No. He won’t answer any of our questions. Come on, Max. The rest of you stay here. I think it might intimidate her if all of us go.
(Reysita and Al’s house. Maggie and Max walk in.) Maggie: Rey! Reysita! Where are you?
They walk into the kitchen and Reysita is lying on the floor. Maggie runs over and kneels next to her.
Maggie: Oh my god. Rey, wake up! Wake up!
She feels her pulse and pulls away in shock.
Maggie: She’s dead.
Max goes over to he and pulls her into a hug.
Max: I’m so sorry. I know you cared a lot about her.
He looks over Maggie’s head at the body and something catches his eye. He pulls away from Maggie and tugs on the neck of the old woman’s dress. He pulls it down, revealing a silver handprint. His jaw tightens in anger. Maggie sees it and starts sobbing harder.
Max: Nasedo.
(back at the dances. Max walks up with his arm around Maggie. She is still crying and Max still looks very angry.)
Liz: What is it? What’s wrong?
Max: Nasedo was here. He killed Reysita.
Maria: Oh my god. We have to go tell Al.
Maggie: We’re not allowed to disturb the drummers. They’re in a trance.
Luke walks over and pulls Maggie away from Max into his arms. She cries into his chest.
Luke: Shh. It’s okay. It’s going to be okay.
(Same place about an hour later. Luke has his arm protectively around Maggie, who still looks shaken, but more composed. The rest of the guys have their arms around their girlfriends protectively, looking around for any sign of Nasedo. Al walks over to them.)
Al: What is the matter?
Maggie: God, Al, I am so sorry. Rey is dead. We just found her about an hour ago in the kitchen. I’m so sorry. I know how much you loved her.
She starts crying again, but more quietly. Al looks like he’s going to faint. He starts running towards the house as fast as his leg could take him.
Isabel: We should leave.
Maggie nods and they start toward the cars.
(The camera shows the group on the long drive back to Roswell as the voice over is playing. All the couples are wound up together protectively.)
V.O.: It’s times like these, when I see my friends in so much pain, one losing a dear friend and the others knowing that the only connection that they have to home is a murder. It’s times like these that I wish thing could be normal. But then I realize that then I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be able to offer my boyfriend and my friends the support that they need. Then I realize that normal is just boring.
