It had been two years. Two years since she had left him to his destiny. Two years, but the pain had never ceased. She still cried late at night curled in her bed, and avoided him each time she saw him in the hallways at school or in the streets of this small town of Roswell. Liz Parker would never stop loving Max Evans. And she knew it.
*** Liz Parker woke up in a rush as the alarm clock rang. It was Monday and in a few days she would graduate with her class as valedictorian. Her speech was not ready yet but with the help of Maria and Alex, she would finish it in time. As she walked toward the school, her heart ached and she saw him. He was standing by the doorways as he usually did to greet her in the early mornings. But fortunately, today he was talking to his sister and Tess, and would not stop her as she passed. Tess and she had not been talking to each other since that fatal day. It was better this way, as she would not face the look of triumph and happiness in the eyes of the one who took her love away.
In the late afternoon, Max Evans was eating at his usual booth at Crashdown Café. Even after all these years, he was not able to go to another place, as this one held preciously the memories of he and Liz. Tess was at the counter talking to a football player. He was glad that Tess left him alone when he needed to, but he knew that she kept the hope that they would end up together one day...
As he finished his improvised snack and was about to climb into his jeep, Tess came after him and kissed him gently on the lips. He did not return the kiss and drove off faster. He hated it but could not change anything because she would not understand that he would never, that he was not capable of loving her while his heart was given to Liz a long time ago. However, he told himself that in two days everything would be different. He would finally tell Liz that he loved her.

The sun shone in the blue sky as the violins played the soft music. It was graduation day. Anxiously Liz looked over the assembly of proud parents and met the eyes of her two best friends, Maria and Alex, who gave her his special thumbs-up sign. She also heard the chatting of the four aliens a few rows ahead. It frightened and relieved her that she would go to Boston University and not see him again.
When the Valedictorian of the class was called, Max turned around knowingly and saw Liz. She had never changed for him but had grown more beautiful. At the end of her speech, he tried to catch her and finally tell her, but her parents and friends blocked him. He stopped near some trees and he watched her talk as she was enlightened by some words Maria said. He had never been able to reach her because she would always avoid him.

She turned again in her bed several times. She was not able to sleep and needed some rest before tomorrow started. She sighed exasperatedly and decided to take a walk in the park. She changed into some street clothes and went down by the ladder. The night seemed peaceful, and maybe it would bring her what she needed now, some sleep. Because of her nights of crying over Max, she was tired. Calmly sitting in one of the rustic benches, she let her thoughts float to him.
The red digital numbers indicated two o’clock already. But why wasn't he able to sleep? He had asked himself the question since he went to bed. Usually, his thoughts were filled with Liz, and peacefully he closed his eyes and was brought to another dream with her. Looking at the clock once again, he got up from his bed and, changing to shirt and jeans, he reached the door.
Unconsciously, the path he chose to go was by the Crashdown Café, and took him to the park. He stopped immediately as he felt her presence. He wanted to go and tell her what his heart ached for, but as he realized how many times she had avoided him, he began to think that maybe she did not feel the same way anymore about him...and left.

It was Saturday, and Maria tried to convince Liz to go out.
“Liz, you cannot stay here all day and whine about Max! Not again!”
“I really can’t, Maria, it’s just that...it’s just that I have to clean my room...”
“Are you kidding me? Your room does not even have a single part covered with dust, as you clean it EVERY TIME I ask you if you want to leave this house and come with me at the mall.”
“Please, Maria, I can’t, what if...what if he’s here too?”
“We will do what we always do, leave before he comes! Now let’s go!”
“Okay...I guess, besides I need some fresh air...”
As they walked out of the store, their hands filled with heavy bags, Liz spotted him. She tried to hide behind a plant but it was too late, he had felt her too. He turned around, but a sad look erased the happy smile, as he remembered the conclusion he had guessed last night. He decided to leave and just waved at her. He headed toward the nearest door. She did not understand his actions; he had always talked to her when he saw her. Tears rolled against her cheeks at the thought that he did not love her.

After the public display of tears at the mall, she ran away and came back to her bedroom, where she freely cried again. She woke up later in her dream. It was an enchanting place and she found Max here. She knew that it was her ‘dream Max’ as she used to come to this place and tell him about her secrets and her love for him.
Max looked at the sun and forest in front of him and then at Liz again. The only thing he remembered was that he had decided to take some rest in the familial couch. He finally realized that he was in Liz’s dreams when she called him.
“You know, Max, I can’t do it anymore.”
“What are you talking about, Liz? I’m not sure that I understand what you are saying. And where are we?”
“It’s our place since that day at the cave...where...where I left you.”
Looking surprisingly at her, Max took a moment to reflect on the answers he could have, as she thought that he was her ‘dream Max’.
“Liz, why don’t you love me anymore?”
“How can you say that, Max? I have and will always love you and you know that!”
Listening to her words, he sat on a rock, shocked by the last statement. She had never ceased to love him, as he had not either. He left her dreams as he decided to go tell her that he felt the same way about her.

Liz woke up when her ‘Max’ disappeared. She thought that maybe it was better if Max had no feelings for her. Anyway, it was the point she would have to reach one day as she kept avoiding him. But she knew that she did not want Max this way. She was scared to start a new relationship of friendship with him, as she believed that he saw her as another classmate. She raised her eyebrows as the doorbell rang and she found herself in his arms.
“Liz, would you mind if I take you for a walk?”
“No...no let’s go.”
She stared at him and wondered why he was here with her at this time of the day. He tried to find the words to explain to her his feelings. As they reached the entrance of the park, he told her.
"Liz, please don’t interrupt me before I’m finished. Since that day at the cave where my destiny was revealed, I had only one thought, that you were my destiny, no matter what the others say. I have the right to choose who I want to be with. That I want to be with the girl I was in love with since third grade, that I want to be with you, Liz. I love you, Liz.”
Listening to him, she felt her heart race and tears of happiness were covering her cheeks. She did not see the car coming, and as she fell to the ground, she heard the desperate cry of her love.
“Liz! NO, this can’t happen to you, wake up, Liz, everything is going to be fine...Liz, please...”
She opened her eyes slightly and understood by the hurt of her body that she was dying. She touched his face one more time and as she pronounced the words ‘I love you’, she closed her eyes.
Two years that they were in love and never told each other. Two years of longing. But today as they had finally revealed the powerful love that connected them, Fate had decided to separate them forever.
